Google Play's 31 August deadline decides which Android casino builds new phones can still install
Google Play's target API level rule bit on 31 August 2026. As the page reads, it does not delete stale casino apps — it quietly stops offering them to new users on newer handsets.
A store policy deadline is not usually a distribution event. This one is. Google’s Play Console Help page on target API level requirements sets 31 August 2026 as the date from which new apps and app updates must target Android 16 (API level 36) or higher to be submitted to Google Play. That date has passed.
What the page actually says
Two separate clauses, and they do different work.
The first is a submission gate. Ship an update to an Android casino app now and the binary has to declare targetSdkVersion 36 or above, or it does not clear review. Google lists narrower bars elsewhere: Wear OS and Android Automotive OS at API level 35 or higher, Android TV and Android XR at API level 34 or higher, same date.
The second is the one operators should read twice. Per the same page, existing apps must target Android 15 (API level 35) or higher to remain available to new users on devices running an Android OS higher than the app’s target API level. Apps sitting at API 34 or lower are available only on devices running an OS at or below their target.
The failure mode is silent
Nothing here says an app gets pulled, and nothing on the page touches an install someone already has. That is why it is easy to miss. A casino app left on an old target keeps launching, keeps taking sessions — and stops appearing as installable for a person who just unboxed a current handset. The store page does not shout. Acquisition simply thins from the newest devices down, and the release-notes history stays quiet because nobody shipped anything.
So update cadence reads as a health signal now, not housekeeping. An Android build whose last release note is a year old is telling you something about its reachable audience. We have not read any named operator’s manifest and assert nothing about whether a particular app meets the target.
The extension is promised, not open
Google’s page says developers will be able to request an extension to 1 November 2026, and that extension forms will be accessible in Play Console later this year. Both clauses are future-tense on the page as of 6 September 2026 — a mechanism Google has described, not a door confirmed open.
The Apple side of this ledger moved recently too — its age-rating questionnaire now asks every app whether it is social media, which is a metadata problem rather than a compilation one. Android’s version is blunter. It is a number in a manifest, and it either clears the bar or it does not.
18+. If you install any of these, the settings screen worth finding first is the one with deposit limits and a session clock — begambleaware.org has the rest.
